Wrestlers tenth in Invitational

SoVaNow.com / January 10, 2013
The Halifax County High School wrestling team finished tenth in the 12-team Rocket Invitational Saturday at Person County High School. Gannon Griffin(145) and James Anderson (160) finished in second place and Ezra Walker (220) finished third.

HCHS had some depth issues, but wanted a better result.

“We went down there without our usual lineup, but still hoped for a better overall finish. Gannon, James and Ezra all had good days and won two matches apiece,” said coach Brady Taylor.

“Both James and Gannon had good shots to win championships, but against good wrestlers, one mistake can be the difference in the match. Ezra learned that in the semi finals, and could have made the finals as well. The only other comet to win a match on the day was Krunal Patel at 120.

“The Rocket Invite is always a good tournament for us. It gives us a chance to shake off any rust from Christmas break, and see some good competition before we go to the first set of District Duals.

“We have a lot of work to do to get ready for the WVD1 at PH.

We have a couple of wrestlers that are still working their way down to new weights and may not have the same lineup as we will in the District tournament, but we still should get an idea of what we’ll be up against in February,” said Taylor.
