Pair just miss qualifying for State Am

SoVaNow.com / June 20, 2013
Two local golfers narrowly missed a spot in the upcoming State Amateur Golf tournament Monday.

W.J. Long and Peter Gasperini, who plays for the Comet golf team, both attempted to qualify for the State Am, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary at The Homestead. Both local golfers barely missed the cut for qualifications.

Long shot 77, and he said golfers carding 73 qualified for the State Am.

“It was a very nice, fun experience playing big boy golf,” said Long.

The qualifying round was held at the home course of the Virginia State Golf Association in the Richmond.

Long said the course was about 7,000 yards, longer than he is accustomed to playing.

“The course was nice. It was a ... quite a bit longer (than the local courses),” said Long.

Long had trouble staying in the fairways off the tee shots. He hit just three fairways off the tees, causing problems. But he certainly had a competitive effort overall with a 77.

Long said he would try again to qualify for the State Am, and he knows areas where he has to improve his game, including driving off the tees.

Gasperini, meanwhile, shot a 74. He incurred an unfortunate two-stroke penalty early. Otherwise, he would have shot 72.

“It’s a learning experience for him,” said Long.

Without the penalty, Gasperini would have qualified.
