Lions slip past Bonner; work still to do

SoVaNow.com / January 16, 2014
The Halifax County Middle School boys basketball team still has work to do after a narrow win at Bonner Monday night.

The Lions prevailed, 39-36. Both teams scored ten points apiece in a tense final period, after HCMS led, 29-26, at the end of three periods.

Dashon Louden led the Lions with 14 points and Otis Slayton had ten. Jamal Brandon added six. HCMS finished with 12 two-point field goals and a pair of treys (from Brandon and Javion Featherston, who had only one field goal). The Lions were nine of 19 from the foul line.

Lion coach W.J. Long said HCMS “took the early lead but played poor defense and let them back in the game. (Halifax) had a two point lead at half, (but) they took a one point lead about halfway through the last quarter. We lacked intensity and our man defense was poor. We missed way to many chip shots which results from a lack of concentration. Bonner could not match us in size and athletic ability. However, they out hustled us for the most part, making it a game in the end. But, a win is a win so we will take it. Lot to work on, however.”.
