Jayvees fall to Bulldogs comeback
SoVaNow.com / January 16, 2014Three players scored in double figures for the Halifax County High School jayvee boys’ basketball team, but the Comets suffered a tough 56-53 loss at Martinsville Tuesday.
Kelonte Gutrich had 14 for HCHS, while Jarvis Owens and Zion Bailey had 12 apiece. Martinsville, however, countered with three double figure scorers and the Bulldogs pulled out the win.
Martinsville also outscored the Comets, 23-14, during a furious fourth quarter rally.
Owens had six points in the final period and Bailey had four, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs rallied to the win.
HCHS had led 17-11 at the end of the first period, and the Comets had a 30-17 edge at the half.
But Halifax only scored nine points in the third period. Martinsville outscored the Comets, 16-9, in the third period.
The Bulldogs clawed through the Comet defense for a 39-23 edge after halftime.
HCHS dropped to 9-3.
