Halifax wins conference realignment appeal

SoVaNow.com / August 18, 2014

The Halifax County High School administration and athletic department has convinced the Virginia High School league realignment committee to reverse course on a proposed move for Comet athletics.

Halifax won its appeal to remain in Conference 16 in the coming 2015-17 cycle, instead of moving into a conference made up almost exclusively of Richmond-area schools. The latest decision still has to pass one final hurdle in September before the decision is final.

The original alignment plan that came out in June put Comet athletics in a conference with Chesterfield and Henrico county schools. There were six schools in that area within 30 miles of each other - and Halifax.

“We were afraid if we stayed there, we would not end up hosting any postseason, conference regional games,” said HCHS athletics director Lawter

Halifax would have moved to Conference 12 and region 5 A South.

The conference uses a central location format for its postseason.

Halifax appealed to go back to Conference 16, its current home. The VHSL has expanded that conference to include Atlee of Mechanicsville high schools and a former district rival for Comets - Patrick Henry-Roanoke.

Halifax is now in Conference 16 with Orange, PH-Ashland and Albemarle. Halifax also remains in the 5-A north region.

The proposal will go to the VHSL executive committee for final approval in September.

Halifax does not anticipate a road block against the final proposal.
