Dragons fall short against Brunswick

SoVaNow.com / February 06, 2013
The Park View Dragons gave the reigning state champion Brunswick Bulldogs all they could handle Friday night as the fierce rivals met at Dragon Gym, but a buzzer beater by Brunswick standout B.J. Stith was enough to keep Brunswick undefeated in the Southside District.

Brunswick, two-time VSHL Division 3 state champions, edged Park View 51-49 in a grueling, hard-fought game for both teams. Park View came into the game hoping to avenge a 67-49 loss earlier in the season to Brunswick on the Bulldogs’ home floor, but not even a raucous overflow crowd could put Park View over the top.

Stith, the Bulldogs’ junior guard who has committed to play at University of Virginia, the alma mater of his father and Brunswick coach Bryant Stith, broke the hearts of the Dragon faithful with an 18 foot fadeway as the buzzer sounded to snap a 49-all tie.

Despite the loss, Park View is poised to advance to the Region 1 postseason tournament with the end of the regular season drawing near. The Dragons improved their standing on Thursday by walloping the Indians of Southampton by a 84-29 score. They were back in action Tuesday at home against Prince Edward, another team contending for a berth in the regional tournament.
