Defense sparks jayvee win
SoVaNow.com / December 09, 2013The Halifax County High School jayvee boys’ basketball team had a successful outing Wednesday against Heritage, sparked by a strong defensive effort from the Comets.
HCHS prevailed in non-conference action, 77-64.
Jarvis Owens led the Comets with 20 points, while Kelonte Gutrich added 17. The Comet defense proved very effective, as the HCHS pressure man to man created a lot of turnovers, coach Nathan Lantor said.
Halifax capitalized on a strong final period, scoring 27 points. That late surge proved enough to get Halifax past Heritage.
The Comets enjoyed balanced scoring in the final period, as Owens had four. Seven other Comets got on the board in the final quarter.
Halifax also scored 20 points in the first period.
Nick Jones added nine points for HCHS. Tyheem Farrell contributed six points and Donyea Williams had six.
