Comets shut down PC

Halifax County High School varsity baseball is off to a 2-0 start, and head coach Kelvin Davis is particularly pleased with the pitching staff.

The Comets shut out Patrick County Friday, 7-0 in Piedmont District action.

Thomas Cole turned in another very strong pitching effort. He worked six innings, with Chase Wilkerson finishing up.

Cole finished with six strikeouts, while walking two walks in an excellent mound appearance. Wilkerson struck out the side in the PC seventh.

HCHS had seven hits.

Leadoff hitter Ryan Powell walked in the first and later scored on a Tristan Howerton RBI sacrifice fly.

HCHS picked up two runs in the third, as Will Harris reached on an error, stole third and later scored. Howerton walked and later scored. Dustin Crews had an RBI sacrifice.

HCHS rolled up four runs in the fifth.

Howerton doubled and Crews walked. Cole had an RBI sacrifice. Tripp Bennett greeted a PC reliever with a key RBI double and Andrew McCann had a run-scoring single.

Halifax will have a busy week ahead, with Franklin County at home Tuesday, followed by a two-game road swing against William Campbell Thursday and Bassett on Friday.
