Running from his past

SoVaNow.com / July 25, 2013

Dear Viewpoint:

Do we really want someone as hypocritical or, at best, waffling for lieutenant governor as E.W. Jackson? In his recent appearance in South Boston, Jackson made a point of trying to distance himself from the ignorant, outrageous and often downright hateful statements he’s made from his pulpit. He would have us believe that he would put aside some of his fundamental religious tenets for the sake of fulfilling his pledge of office. But will he really support science education in our schools when he has declared that he does not accept the validity of much of that science? Will he support the civil rights of individuals he has marginalized from his pulpit? Will he “stand up for the preservation of freedom for all people” even as he condemns the life style or beliefs of those same people? We have only his word as a candidate for office that he will do so and his word as a man of God that he will do exactly the opposite. He reasserted this when he met with local supporters, saying that his position on social issues are fixed and based on his personal religious beliefs. Can we really accept his assurance that he will put these beliefs second to his duty as an elected official when those duties might conflict with his religious views? Cuccinelli has never been able to do this, why should be we expect Jackson to do the same?
