From the tenor of his statement and your story (“Before the plea, a confession,” News & Record, July 18) one would assume we’re supposed to feel sympathy for former sheriff Stanley Noblin because he lived beyond his means, ran up a big credit card debt and covered it by stealing over $100,000 from the Sheriff’s office accounts, especially the Drug Task Force asset forfeiture money.
Most of the Task Force money taken was the product of the work done by Major Richard Pulliam and those who served under him. Noblin showed precious little mercy for former sheriff Jeff Oakes, whom he has prosecuted for erasing a computer program, and Pulliam, whom Noblin hounded out of his police career and the state of Virginia. A lawman who does that and grossly betrays the public trust deserves to serve time in prison.
