Honor thy contract

SoVaNow.com / October 11, 2012
Dear Viewpoint:

The Rev. Bill Wilkins seems to have forgotten that when his church received its tax-exempt status it made a contract with the IRS. This contract had a number of stipulations, one of which is that his church was not to indulge in political advocacy. He is more than welcome to use his pulpit to urge his congregation to vote the way he thinks it should...but he can’t have his cake and eat it, too. That is, he should not accept the generosity of the taxpayers who are paying for services such a police and fire protection while at the same time choosing to ignore the rules that came with that privilege. It is simply dishonest for him to accept a tax-exempt status from the IRS and then renege on his part of the bargain. Preach politics all you like, Rev. Wilkins, but at least be honest enough to cancel a contract you have chosen to dishonor.
