Melvin Wells Jr.

Melvin Wells Jr. of Pine Trail, Halifax, died Nov. 29, 2012 at the Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson, Md., at the age of 78.

Mr. Wells was born in Halifax County on Sept. 26, 1934 and was the son of the late Melvin Well Sr. and Malissie Ferrell Crews. He was married to Bessie Dorsey Wells and was a member of New Arbor Baptist Church.

Mr. Wells is survived by his wife and two sons, Lawrence Davis Wells of Halifax, and Damon Lamont Holmes and his fiancé, Denise of Baltimore, Md., his step daughter: Sallie Martin of Glen Allen, three sisters: Mamie Tucker of Vernon Hill, Florine Edmonds and husband, Walter, and Marie Leigh and husband Edward, all of Halifax; a brother: George Crews and wife, Annette of Halifax; a step sister: Belle Jackson of Baltimore, Md., 18 grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Classie Crews, Patricia Crews, Martha Well, Dorothy Crews. Hilda Whalen and Barbara Whalen; brothers-in-law: Henry Whalen, Jerry Whalen and Thomas Dorsey and wife, Margie; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including the devoted, Shareon Smith.

A funeral will be held Saturday, Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. with services at New Arbor Baptist Church with Rev. Nelson Stamps officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 1004 Pine Trail, Halifax.

Public viewing hours will be Friday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are by Jeffress Funeral Home, North Main Street, South Boston.
