Carolyn Olivia Mangum Downey

Carolyn Olivia Mangum Downey, 69, of Durham, N.C., entered eternal rest Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 at Duke University Hospital, Durham. Mrs. Downey was born in Mecklenburg County, on Nov. 23, 1943 the daughter of the late Roy “Pikey” Mangum and Louise Mangum. She attended the public schools of Mecklenburg County and graduated from West End High School. She was baptized at Second Baptist Church in Clarksville, and was previously employed by Nortel Networks.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Downey was preceded in death by a son, Daryl Downey; three sisters and four brothers.

She leaves to cherish her memories her loving husband of 51 years, David Downey Jr. of Durham, one son, Derrick Downey; one step-son, Raymond Stokes; one daughter, Misha Mack; two granddaughters, Kamesha Downey and Chante Downey; one grandson Derrick Downey II, three great-grandchildren, Cameron Daishaun Killett, Jaslynn Olivia Downey and Carter Amir Watson; one brother, Milo Mangum (Hazel) and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends.

A funeral was held Monday, Jan. 21, at the chapel of C.H. Harris Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Watkins, officiating. Burial followed in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

Arrangements are by C.H. Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
