Over 400 Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative members and their families came to the Cooperative Pavilion in Chase City on June 15 for the Annual Meeting of the Members held for those who own and receive electricity from the Cooperative. Chairman of the Board Bobby Conner welcomed MEC members and special guests to the event.
The regional landfill authority that includes Mecklenburg as a member is pondering an appeal after losing in court last week to Shearin Construction — the company that was booted from the landfill building project in 2007.

Dissension within the ranks of the La Crosse Volunteer Fire Department has led to the departure of the town’s longtime fire chief and other veteran firefighters and in turn raised questions about the department’s ongoing effectiveness.
Chase City Town Council suspended the new water rate hikes at its Monday meeting because the town is not yet buying water from the Roanoke River Service Authority.
A Clarksville town council workshop last week was marked by a sharp exchange between members Connie Torres and Carolyn Hite over three issues: the number of times Town Manager Melinda Moran traveled outside of Clarksville for meetings and training, the cost of her travel, and the use and existence of a Town debit card.

Mecklenburg County saw its unemployment rate drop to 9.5 percent in April, down from the March rate of 10.1 percent. There only1,360 members of the county’s 14,293 member civilian labor force were still job hunting.
