Storm sweeps through, sparing damages

SoVaNow.com / August 20, 2014
A brief storm that swept through Mecklenburg County Monday afternoon resulted in scattered power outages around the area from downed tree limbs and lightning strikes.

David Lipscomb with Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative said Emporia and areas east took the brunt of the storm. At one point, over three hundred Emporia residents were without power. He also said about 33 people near Gasburg lost power after lightning struck a transformer in the area.

Nearly all of Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative clients had their power restored by 4 p.m. Monday.

Dominion Virginia Power said their customers experienced no widespread problems from the storm. There was, according to a Dominion spokesperson, a “momentary outage” around 1:39 p.m. in South Hill that knocked out service to the fire and police. This was attributed to a falling tree limb. Otherwise, they had no “numbers to show.”
