Police warn of scam artist working in Alton area

SoVaNow.com / August 16, 2012
On Tuesday, around 3:30, deputies were called to Horseshoe Trail, Alton to speak with an elderly man who reported being victimized by a scam. An off-duty Halifax town policeman who was on his way home also responded.

A white male, wearing khaki pants and driving a late-model white pickup truck believed to be a 4-door Ford F-150, had come to his home, carrying a notepad and a tape measure, saying he was conducting a census.

The homeowner allowed him to come inside his residence where he began taking measurements of doors and walls. The suspect then asked the man if he would have a seat and wait while he went to get a camera to take some pictures. The homeowner then heard the truck start up and leave, and he immediately checked his wallet which was on his nightstand, and discovered that his money had been stolen from the wallet.

The man was so distraught that the deputies called local E.M.T’s to check his vitals, according to police reports.

Another scam is also circulating: Someone claiming to be from the Social Security Administration calls to say that you will be issued an updated SSN, but they need your bank account information in order for you to receive Social Security checks.

Sheriff Fred Clark reminds citizens that they should never give out Social Security or bank information over the telephone.
