Mecklenburg trustees turn vacant school over to county
SoVaNow.com / May 22, 2013Mecklenburg County school trustees voted to return Buckhorn Elementary School to the county government during their monthly meeting of the School Board.
Buckhorn Elementary School was closed three years ago as part of a cost-cutting move by the school system. Since then, school officials and the school board have come under fire for allowing the building to deteriorate and for failing to secure it.
After closing at the end of the 2010 school year, Buckhorn Elementary has been used for storage: Extra desks, white boards, old textbooks and teaching supplies all were haphazardly stored in the building. More recently, the old school housed cleaning equipment and supplies used by the schools’ janitorial company, Service Solutions.
In January, two members of the Board of Supervisors, Dan Tanner and David Brankley, had criticized Schools Superintendent James Thornton and the school board for the building’s condition, including a partially collapsed roof, standing water inside the building and furnishings and other items strewn about the interior.
