Winston Harrell has been named to fill an open seat on South Boston Town Council. His appointment followed a closed session of Council on Monday afternoon.

Council members interviewed two candidates for the seat, which was vacated when Ed Owens was elected mayor of the Town, before choosing Harrell.

Harrell’s term will expire in June, the date of Owens term’s expiration.

Harrell, whose appointment came on a unanimous vote, is a past president of the South Boston Lions Club and a member of the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce. He is a board member of the Community Arts Foundation (the Prizery). He also serves as president of the Good Samaritan group and is an elder in South Boston Presbyterian Church.

His great grandfather, R. O. Harrell, Sr. served as mayor of South Boston from 1933 to 1949.
