Halifaxjobless rate drops, but so does total number of jobs

SoVaNow.com / October 24, 2013

Halifax County’s jobless rate dipped slightly in August, but so did the total number of jobs.

The apparent improvement in the top-line unemployment number — 10.3 percent, compared to 10.4 percent in July — can be explained by the shrinkage of the active work force. The number of employed persons, active job seekers and others who make up the civilian labor force fell to 14,800 persons in August. In July the labor force numbereed 15,125.

A decline in the size of the work force is typical around August as students exit the active work force to return to school.

According to the Virginia Employment Commission, overall Halifax County experienced a loss of 59 jobs from July to August.

It was much the same story statewide as the VEC reported a slight percent drop in the size of the labor force. Virginia experienced job cuts coming in trade, transportation and construction.

Elsewhere in the region, Mecklenburg County saw its unemployment rate drop to 10.1 percent in August from 10.6 percent in July. The decline came despite the fact there were 98 fewer jobs available.

Charlotte County also lost 151 members of its July labor force as well as having 116 fewer jobs in August. Its unemployment rate fell from 8.4 in July to 7.9 in August.

To the west Pittsylvania County’S August jobless rate stood at 6.8 percent, the lowest in the area.
