Halifax has much in store for Earth Day
SoVaNow.com / April 21, 2014
Saturday is Earth Day and the Town of Halifax is preparing for its fifth annual Earth Day Extravaganza, to be held at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday, April 26 from 10 to 3.
Town Events Coordinator Rebecca Ramey is excited about the many events — educational displays, tutorials, children’s activities, games and much more — that will be offered during the day-long celebration..
Visitors will have a chance to see demonstrations on everything from composting, creating raised beds in wood pallets, portable raised bed units, and more. Pallets will also be used to create an invertebrate habitat designed to provide a refuge for the types of animals and insects that drive away unwanted pests.
In addition, there will be demonstrations on soil erosion, making your own green cleaners, and energy efficiency.
Ramey, a parent of two 5 year old boys, has a desire to make the events fun and exciting for kids, too.
“I wanted to take the Earth Day event beyond just planting a seed. I wanted to make it an event they would remember and whose memories would carry with them as they got older.
“In addition, those memories could help spark a deeper respect for the earth and the environment. Children will have the opportunity to burrow through a long tunnel, seeing pictures of various underground dwelling animals along the way, and popping up to see their parents like little prairie dogs.
“It’s fun and educational at the same time,” says Ramey.
Whether it’s making an Earth necklace from old washers, planting baby trees with the Master Gardeners, making bird feeders, blowing giant bubbles, or racing to recycle, kids will have plenty to do, and all at no cost.
“It will be like going to the children’s or science museum with your entire family, and not having to break the bank to do so,” she said.
“My desire for those who attend this event is that they come away with a greater knowledge of all the ways that we have to get closer to nature in Halifax Country, how to be more environmentally conscious, and at the same time, be glad that they decided to spend the afternoon at that event because of how entertaining it was.”
Coming off the heels of Halicraft Art Festival, Ramey hopes that people will be enthusiastic to see what else the Town of Halifax has to offer: “My real hope,” says Ramey “is that Halifax becomes a destination town for Halifax County and the entire Southside Virginia region. To do this, the events we offer have to be above anyone’s expectations and really get people talking.”
Rebecca credits the ability to offer all of this to the help and support of local sponsors: Hite Insurance, Reiter & Reiter CPA, and Molasses Grill have supported Earth Day as Green Sponsors. Their support and enthusiasm for events in the town of Halifax has been amazing, she says.
Numerous other local and regional companies have also supported the event with both funding and materials.
“I think the support of our community is what is going to really enable us to put Halifax on the must-see tourism map.”
This is the first official event for Ramey in her new job as events coordinator for the town. “My mission with this job is to bring focus to the town events, making them relevant to the event title, the town and the attendees,” she said.
