Halifax County Trustees review prospects for Governor’s School
SoVaNow.com / March 11, 2013The Halifax County School Board will meet tonight to discuss a number of items, including the prospects for rejoining the Regional Governor’s School.
The trustees will gather at 6 p.m. at the second floor meeting room of the Mary Bethune Complex in Halifax.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Merle Herndon is expected to speak on the possibility of Halifax County participating in the Governor’s School, which the division dropped several years ago due to budget cuts.
The Regional Governor’s School is offered through Southside Virginia Community College for top academic achievers in the region, who travel to SVCC to take classes under the instruction of college professors.
Figures cited at a previous School Board meeting suggested the cost of enrolling Halifax County in the regional school in Keysville would be about $65,000. About $40,000 is tied to the costs of transporting students back and forth from Keysville to HCHS.
During an earlier discussion on the Governor’s School, Dr. Betty Adams of the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center said she would try to help establish a local site for a governors school-type program.
However, tight budgets may conspire against hopes of rejoining the Governors School. The School Board has requested $976,826 in additional local money for the upcoming 2013-14 budget, which takes effect in July, but the Board of Supervisors is offering only $360,000. The Governors School funding is folded into the overall School Board request.
Also on the agenda for tonight’s School Board meeting:
A review of the calendar for the upcoming 2013-14 school year, which will be presented by Linda Owen.
Consideration of a memorandum of understanding with Emergency Services Coordinator Kirby Saunders, spelling out the use of Halifax County Middle School as a primary community shelter during emergencies.
Operations Manager Larry Roller will bring bids to trustees for the replacement of the HVAC system at the STEM Center.
Lisa Long, principal of Cluster Springs Elementary, is expected to make a presentation about activities under way at her school, and Doris Faulkner has requested time to address trustees during their regular citizen comment period.
CommentsGov. School is waste of time an money. Students should be able to learn what they need here in the county. If not why are we giving them all these millions?
