Halifax Council expected to choose new member

The Town of Halifax will gain a new council member at Town Council’s meeting Tuesday.

Council will have a closed sessio at 6 p.m., followed by the open meeting.

Council members are expected to choose a new member from among those four citizens in Ward D who have applied to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Phil Hammond, who has moved to North Carolina.

Among those who submitted their names for the seat are Susan Granger, a school teacher; Phil Hollis, a retiree who has previously served on Town Council and headed its Finance Committee; Ron Reiter, an accountant and member of the Town Planning Commission; and Christy Johnson, also a a member of the Town Planning Commission.

The appointee will serve until a special election to fill the seat can be held in November. If the appointee wants to continue serving on Council, he or she will have to run for the seat in the November election.
