Former Halifax County Sheriff Noblin indicted on forgery, embezzlement charges
SoVaNow.com / November 13, 2012A Halifax County grand jury has returned 21 indictments of forgery and embezzlement against former Sheriff Stanley Noblin, marking the latest phase of an investigation into missing Sheriff’s Office funds that was launched more than a year ago.
Noblin, who was ousted from office in the November 2011 election by current Sheriff Fred Clark, has been under investigation ever since the missing funds were brought to the attention of law enforcement officials in August 2011. The probe has been led by special prosecutor Eric Cooke, the Southampton County Commonwealth’s Attorney, with the assistance of Virginia State Police accountant William Talbert.
Search warrants issued in the case indicated that up to $113,180.50 in funds intended for law enforcement activities — including drug interdiction — was missing from the Sheriff’s Office. The revelations prompted numerous searches of department records, as well as Noblin’s personal financial information and bank accounts, by State Police investigators.
The indictments issued Tuesday by the Halifax grand jury include 14 true bills for forgery and seven for embezzlement. The indictments cover a span of time from 2009 to 2011.
The allegations against Noblin were first brought to the attention of then-Commonwealth’s Attorney Kim White by former sheriff Jeff Oakes, who Noblin defeated for re-election in a bitter 2007 campaign. In his re-election bid against Clark last year, Noblin called the allegations politically motivated.
Cooke, who was appointed to oversee the investigation after White recused herself, had indicated in September that the Noblin probe was drawing close to possible charges being filed against the former sheriff. ““I suspect very shortly you’ll get the answer to that question,” he said.

That bad penny just keeps coming back. Never any doubt it was political revenge for the computer incident when the new sheriff came to town.
In all honesty I suspect equal dirt could be found on Mr. Oakes if only someone would go to the trouble of digging it up. Shouldn't be too difficult, after all.
Don't know which one is worse for not riding off into the sunset- Oakes or Danville's former police chief. People jabber about the toxicity of uranium mining- uranium can't hold a glowstick to the toxicity those two individuals can generate.
