Fire forces family out of Loftis Road home
SoVaNow.com / March 07, 2013A late Tuesday night fire razed a Loftis Road home and has forced the family living there to seek temporary shelter with other family members, according to a spokesman for the South Boston Fire Department.
South Boston firefighters were called out at 11:11 p.m. to a structure fire at a one-story brick home located at 1028 Loftis Road, South Boston. The house is owned by Gary and Janet Stevens, who lived there with a daughter and granddaughter.
According to Emergency Services Coordinator Kirby Saunders, Stevens and her daughter heard a loud noise and opened the door to the basement, allowing heavy smoke to billow out. The family escaped the house without injury.
By the time 18 South Boston firefighters could reach the scene with two trucks, the structure was consumed in fire. South Boston was assisted by firefighters from the Cluster Springs, Midway and Virgilina departments.
There was a wood stove in the basement, which is where the blaze is thought to have originated before spreading to the main floor and the attic of the home. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
The home, valued at $110,000, sustained damages estimated to reach $70,000.
Firefighters were on the scene for some three hours until the blaze was brought under control around 2:20 a.m. Wednesday morning.
According to Ginger Weaver with the American Red Cross, the family is being assisted with groceries and clothing. The Red Cross will continue providing assistance as needed.
