Fear of foul play grows in disappearance

Police are growing concerned that foul play may figure in the disappearance of Wendy Dawn Beadles Francis, who has not been heard from for nearly three and a half months.

Brookneal has become the focus of the investigation after the 35-year-old woman was last seen June 8 at the home she shared with her father on Brad Smith Trail in Nathalie.

Known to go missing for weeks at a time, Francis left this summer and did not return. Family members, did not tell police she was missing until mid-August.

But now, according to Halifax County Sheriff Fred Clark, there is a real concern that harm may have come to Francis, a brown-haired, blue-eyed woman who weighs some 120 pounds and stands five feet, four inches tall.

“We have no concrete evidence to lead us to believe there may have been foul play,” said Clark, “but neither do we have any evidence that there hasn’t been. I just don’t know what to think.”

Tracking down her acquaintances and retracing her possible moves, investigators learned that Francis has friends in Brookneal and may have stayed there a few days. However, those same friends have been unable to shed any light on Francis’ disappearance. One of her friends whom she often spoke with daily hasn’t heard from her, either, said Clark.

Since Francis was believed to have last surfaced in Brookneal, the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office is joining with the Halifax Sheriff’s Office to lead the search for her. Maj. J.T. Guthrie of the Campbell Sheriff’s Office is assigned to the case. Authorities in both counties are asking for the public’s help in tracking down Francis.

Anyone with information to share on the woman’s disappearance is asked to contact the Halifax or Campbell Sheriff’s Departments.
