Deadline today for Halifax council seat
SoVaNow.com / February 28, 2013Today is the deadline for persons in the Town of Halifax who live in Ward D to apply for a vacancy on Town Council.
Council has a vacant seat with the recent resignation of Phil Hammond. Hammond resigned the post after moving to North Carolina.
Interested parties have until 5 p.m. today to come forward with their interest in serving on Council.
Wednesday morning, Halifax Town Manager Carl Espy confirmed that he has heard from three persons who have indicated their desire to be appointed to Council. One is Susan Granger, a Danville school teacher and Halifax resident, who has publicly expressed her candidacy.
Granger was not available for comment yesterday.
Espy declined to disclose the identities of the other candidates who have not yet spoken out about their candidacies. He said he considered it a personnel matter.
Of Granger, “she is not the only candidate to have expressed an interest in serving on Council,” he said.
Council has scheduled a special meeting Tuesday to go into closed session to consider the applications. After discussing the matter, Council members are expected to publicly announce their decision on the appointment.
The person named to Council will serve until a special election is conducted in November. The interim Council member must run for election at that time to continue serving on the town’s governing body.
Town Council re-advertised the vacancy after receiving only one expression of interest with a previous deadline.
