Chase City landmark comes tumbling down
SoVaNow.com / November 22, 2013Crews began the work Friday of tearing down the old Leggett department store in Chase City after the building was condemned in August due to a roof collapse.
By Friday afternoon, the demolition had claimed most of the wall of the building that faces Second Street.
The center part of the downtown Chase City was closed to traffic Friday while the work proceeded. Traffic will continue to be rerouted until the walls of the building come down.
The demolition became inevitable after the roof to the building collapsed in August. The building, owned by Mohammed and Sahar Ghanem, proprietors of Gino's Restaurant next door, once housed Leggett's Department Store, the lynchpin of Chase City's downtown.
