SoVaNow.com / November 21, 2012Thieves employed a brazen technique to haul off cash from Gene’s Orange Market — smashing a truck through the front of the convenience store and driving away with its ATM machine.
At 2:39 a.m. on Tuesday morning, the alert system at Gene’s Orange Market, located on U.S. 58 west of town, awakened the owner and sent law enforcement officers scrambling to the scene of a mess.
A ton truck had plowed through the front of the building, allowing the thieves to steal the ATM machine inside as well as an undisclosed amount of cash from the store.
Sheriff’s deputies and South Boston police officers reached the scene within minutes of the alarm going off, but by then the culprits had gotten away.
Sheriff Fred Clark said his department has leads in the case and hopes it can be resolved soon.
In the meantime, McDannald Construction was on the job this week repairing the storefront, aiming to allow the business to reopen hopefully by Wednesday, said the owner of the business.
Clark offered no guess for the toll inflicted on the building, but the storefront itself sustained thousands of dollars in damages.
