Ash stirred up in Dan River at Danville
SoVaNow.com / March 06, 2014
Members of the hazardous materials unit of the Danville Fire Department on Wednesday afternoon responded to a call they received citing an unusual appearance in the Dan River. The caller said he had spotted a strange looking substance above the dam at Union Street Bridge near the south bank of the river.
Members of the hazmat team collected samples there and testing found the substance to be coal ash.
Assistant Fire Chief Steve Dishman told Danville officials that the hazmat team believed the coal ash was stirred up from the bottom of the river following a higher water flow than usual due to this week’s earlier rain and snow.
He added that he believed this to be something that is to be expected from time to time as water in the river gets higher.
Officials at Danville’s Utilities said they have seen no visible signs of coal ash entering the water treatment plant through the water intake at the river and noted that all tests of treated water leaving the water treatment plant continue to show that the water is clean and safe to drink.
Danville has notified the Virginia Department of Emergency Management of the incident, saying they will continue to monitor the situation.
They ask that any citizen seeing something of concern like this to please contact them immediately.
CommentsBut the EPA says cleanup efforts may not be possible because the ash might be stirred up during removal.
