$12,500 awarded for livestock facility
SoVaNow.com / May 09, 2013Halifax County has been awarded a $12,500 planning grant to develop a small-scale animal processing center in the county.
The facility would be USDA-inspected and would allow local and regional beef, lamb, goat and swine producers to have meats processed and brought to market locally.
Eleven projects serving more than thirty localities in the state were awarded grants totaling $249,000 to support the growth of agriculture and forestry. The Governor’s Agriculture & Forestry Development Fund planning grants program was developed to encourage local governments and regional organizations to analyze and plan strategically how they can support and integrate agriculture and forestry-based industries into their communities’ overall economic development efforts.
Guidelines were announced in late November and Halifax County applied by the March 1, deadline.
Halifax County Ag Development Agent Leah Brown recommended the proposed project as an excellent match for the county and Southside Virginia. The budget is $25,000, for which Halifax County will provide a match of 50 percent, or $12,500, with $6,250 comprised of in-kind contributions. County supervisors at their February meeting approved the cash match of $6,250 if the state grant was granted.
Benefits of the facility include lower transportation costs for local producers, more stable market prices and high quality, healthier meats for local consumers, as well as job creation benefits for farm producers and at the processing facility itself.
