Accomplished artist, champion athlete, acclaimed tobacco auctioneer, interpreter and defender of the countryside — all describe Robert F. “Bob” Cage, who died Wednesday 19 in Raleigh, N.C. where he had been under Hospice care for the past several weeks. He was 91.

Town of Halifax takes steps to paint street lines

The Town of Halifax is contracting to have the on-street parking lines and yellow no parking curbs painted along U.S. Highway 501 (Main Street) on Monday Nov. 22 starting at 4 p.m. beginning from the railroad tracks and moving north. The crew plans to delay the sections along the Main Street commercial area until after 5 p.m. later that afternoon as a convenience to businesses and patrons.

New faces appear at joint meeting

It was a night for reports and introductions as Halifax County supervisors and town councilmen gathered for their regular bi-monthly meeting on Monday night at the Mary Bethune Complex.

Among the Downtown South Boston merchants getting festive for Christmas Open House this weekend are those at Enchanted Surroundings. Reveling in the season are, on the floor from left, Janice Puryear and Patsy Owen; seated, Ginger Owen and Tootie Rhodes with her pet dog. The 24th annual event runs 1-5 p.m. Sunday with C-Action Photography's David Conner II taking Santa pictures of kids of all ages and some merchants offering the chance to win gift certificates. The grant prize: a $100 Downtown gift certificate. The Enchanted Surroundings folks will actually throw two parties: They'll host a separate Christmas open house Friday, 6-10 p.m.
