Benefit to aid Forlines family
SoVaNow.com / October 10, 2012How often we go about our lives, oblivious to the issues and problems of others - until it happens to us! A major health program can wipe out of finances in a heartbeat! Where do you go from there? How do you pay the bills? And the bills continue to mount up higher and higher! In such circumstances, one would expect to become frustrated, depressed, and anything but happy, always worrying about those bills that continue to fill your mailbox. But, there is a family in Halifax County that is facing such issues, and they continue to wear a smile on their faces, despite the heartaches and worries they now face.
The Forlines family have been faced with a double tragedy! Their 2 1/2 year old daughter, Makayla, was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy several years ago. If that were not enough, their 5 year old son, Sean, was recently diagnosed with a type of cancer called Sarcoma, which was determined to be malignant. This family now faces even bigger challenges as they attempt to pay their children’s medical bills. Each child needs their own set of medical treatments and medicines, the expenses of which are tremendous! Makayla will not be able to learn to walk, run or play like other children unless she has a much needed operation. This operation may enable her to walk. This operation, which will be performed in Newark, N.J., will cost as much as $16,000, which does not include motel bills or travel expenses. Then there are the travel expenses incurred for Makayla’s frequent trips to Richmond for treatments. Skipping these treatments due to lack of funds is not an option. Carl and Jennifer Forlines have another child, who is blessed with good health. One wonders how much more this family must face emotionally and financially.
One would expect this family to be down trodden as they face these insurmountable financial challenges! However, the Forlines family can be seen wearing smiles, and having a strong faith that their financial needs will be met as they face each step in both of their children’s medical treatments. But, they need our help! Rather than sit idly by, feeling sorry for themselves, they have become proactive in an attempt to raise the needed funds for Makayla’s operation, and the additional expenses they now incur due to Sean’s cancer.
On Saturday, October 13, the family has planned Makayla’s Family Day and Fun Raiser. The event will be held at the Mount Laurel Ruritan Club between noon-7 p.m. The Ruritan club is located at 5124 Mount Laurel Road, Clover. There will be plenty of children’s games and good food to enjoy for all. Raffle tickets are also being sold, first prize is a $300 VISA card, second prize is a $200 VISA card and third prize is a $100 VISA card. The tickets are $1 each and can be bought from family members prior to the event, or at the Fun Raiser. All proceeds from the event and ticket sales will benefit the medical expenses being incurred and primarily, the upcoming operation for Makayla.
A dinner will be served from 3-7 p.m. consisting of your choice of chicken or BBQ plates, and includes two sides, a roll, dessert and a drink all for just $8.00 a plate. The chicken and BBQ will be prepared by Bubba Cousins. There will also be foods to enjoy during the entire events, including hot dogs, which will be available all day. Beginning at noon, stew will be served. Stew will be sold for $5 a quart if you’d like to take some home with you.
There will be lots of music throughout the day, and vendors will be advertising and/or selling their products. Raggedy Ann and Smokey the Bear will be on hand, and a fire truck and a race car, courtesy of Libby Clay, will be on display. Be sure to sign up for the corn hole tournament from 1-2 p.m. for just $5. The winning team will receive a trophy! There will be plenty of fun things for the kids to enjoy, such as a bounce house, pumpkin painting, face painting and about 25 games to play. There will also be a bake sale, massages by Elizabeth Talley and an auction of donated items conducted by auctioneer Sammy Watts at 2 p.m. Some of the items include Boston butts, baskets, and a new hand built custom Pizzecci guitar with a custom Pizzecci hard case and glasses from Germany. The winning raffle ticker will be drawn at 6 p.m., you do not have to be present to win.
Music will be provided by such groups as the Gloryland String Band, James “Bumpsy” Hazelwood, The Bluegrass 5, the Halifax Hillbillies, Mark and Linda Satterfield, Sam Watts, the Hilliard Family (gospel) and Snow and Lawrence Acoustics. Sponsors for the event include Sammy Watts and Wanda Lowery of J.W. Shelton Realty, David Forlines of Mid Atlantic Test Balance and Ronnie and Kay Snead of K.R. Snead Trucking.
This event is intended to be filled with all kinds of fun for all ages, but especially for the kids. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the day! When you meet Makayla, you will be greeted with her sweet, shy smile. All that is needed is a simple “hi” from you. Sean is a talkative little man, who will talk your eyes off if you let him! Both are sweet children facing some horrendous issues at such a young age. They want a normal childhood, and to be able to run and play with friends. Neither disease is contagious, so don’t be afraid to walk up and introduce yourself to the children. The family would like to raise awareness of these diseases through this event. Jennifer Forlines commented that she wants her children to have a normal life and for them to be able to live their lives to the best of their abilities.
More sponsors and vendors are welcome for this upcoming Fun Raiser. It only costs $30 to become a vendor. You must provide your own tables and/or tent. More items are also needed for the auction. If you would like to donate something for the auction, or become a vendor or sponsor, please call or leave a message at 434-471-1115. This event will take place rain or shine. All proceeds from the event will assist the family as they pay for Makayla’s upcoming operation and Sean’s medical treatments. Here’s your chance to help a family in need! Don’t let it pass you by!
