Judges named for Big Bad BBQ Battle in Boydton
SoVaNow.com / July 03, 2013The second annual Big Bad BBQ Battle in Boydton is set for Saturday, August 24 at the Courthouse Square in Boydton. This year’s judges include seasoned veterans from 2012 as well as some new faces. Horseshoe Restaurant owner Scott Rogers of South Hill is returning along with Mecklenburg County Sheriff Bobby Hawkins, Plantation Dog Food owner Charles Garnett, Chase City Mayor Eddie Bratton and Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors member Glanzy Spain. Newly chosen judges are Chase City physician Earl Moore and Brunswick County Sheriff B. K. Roberts.
The judges will sample each barbeque entry in all three categories and apply official scores based on appearance and taste. Another slate of anonymous judges will cast ballots to choose the Showmanship Award.
Teams of five or less members are eligible to compete, after submitting an application. Applications are available at Boydton Town Hall or at http://www.boydton.org. The grand prize “Best of the Best” award is $1,000 and each category award (ribs, butts/shoulders and brisket) pays $500 for first place and $250 for second.
Five teams competed in 2012, and Historic Boydton’s Renaissance, Inc. President Will Ober said this year’s competition is expected to be “bigger and better.” In addition to the barbeque competition, Boydton’s Life Station is hosting street vendors; Boydton Baptist Young Adults For Christ is sponsoring the second annual Cornhole Tournament, and JB and the Get Down Browns will be entertaining on the Square.
