‘A Christmas Story’ opens to huge crowds, lots of laughs
SoVaNow.com / December 12, 2012More than a thousand people attended showings of “A Christmas Story” at the historic Colonial Theater last weekend. With two school matinees and two public performances, the show opened to laughter, applause and great reviews.
The story, written by Jean Shepherd and immortalized in a 1983 movie, tells the story of a young boy’s quest to secure a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas. It seems that everyone is aligned against him, from his mother, his teacher, even Santa. They all warn him, “You’ll shoot your eye out.”
This Colonial Actors Theatre Society production, which is being jointly sponsored by the Town of South Hill and the South Hill Chamber of Commerce, features both veterans of previous shows and a host of newcomers. Some of the cast making their first appearance on the Colonial stage are Brian Jirgl who plays the grown-up Ralph, Lindsey Swoap who plays Mother, and Aaron and Nathan Reamey: real-life brothers who steal the show as brothers Ralphie and Randy. Among those who have appeared in previous C.A.T.S. productions are Greg Thrift as the Old Man, Heather Susee as Miss Shields, and Claire Walker as Esther Jane.
There are three remaining opportunities to catch a performance: this Friday and Saturday night, Dec. 14-15 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15, and are available by phone at 434-262-4170, online at http://www.colonialcenterva.org, or at the box office at 220 S. Mecklenburg Ave from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
